We are ME Academy (“We”, “us”, “our” or “ME Academy”). For the purpose of the legislation on Data Protection, ME Academy is the controller of Your personal information (herein defined).

This Privacy Policy governs the collection, access to, and use of Your data, the Platforms, and our Products. By accessing or using the Platforms, You consent to the data practices described in this Policy and our Terms and Conditions of Service.  Please note that if You sign up for ME Academy’s Affiliate Programme, this Privacy Policy and the Affiliate Terms and Conditions will apply to You and You agree to be bound by them.  If You do not agree to any part of this Privacy Policy, then You must desist from accessing the Services.  By proceeding to access or use the Services, You agree to these terms and are bound by them.  

  1. Definitions

2.1. Account: means an account opened and maintained by You with ME Academy to enable You to use or access our Services.

2.2 API: Application Programming Interface is a set of protocols, tools, and definitions for building software and applications. They include related documentation, source code, SDKs (Software Development Kits), executable applications, and other materials provided by the API partner.

2.3. Cookies: Small text files placed on your device by a website, which store information about your preferences and actions.

2.4. Data Protection Legislation:  Nigerian Data Protection Act 2023, Nigeria Data Protection Regulation 2019 (as may be amended, extended, re-enacted or consolidated from time to time – the “NDPR”) and other applicable laws.

2.5 Geolocation Data: Information about your physical location; typically collected from your IP address or GPS-enabled devices.

2.6 LMS: This Learning Management System (LMS) platform, which is owned and provided by ME Academy for the delivery of online courses, training programmes, and educational content focused on the practice of corporate 

commercial law.

2.7 Personal Data or Personal Information: Any information relating to an identifiable person, which may include but is not limited to: name, email, identification numbers, IP address, geolocation, etc. It is information that can be used alone or with other data to identify, contact, or locate an individual.

2.8 Platform(s):  the LMS and the SME Hub.

2.9 Policy:  This Privacy Policy by ME Academy.

2.10 Processing of Personal Data: Any operation or set of operations performed on personal data, such as collection, storage, modification, sharing, analysis, or deletion.

2.11 Products: the LMS, SME Hub, the Services, and any other products and/or services currently offered by ME Academy, or that may be introduced at a later date. 

2.12 Services: Products and services provided by ME Academy on the Learning Management System, including the online courses, training programmes, and educational content focused on the practice of corporate commercial law, and the legal resources and templates provided by ME Academy through the SME Hub.

2.13 SME Hub:  The platform provided by ME Academy for the support of Startups and SMEs in building and sustaining a culture of corporate governance, legal, and regulatory compliance through ME Academy’s provision of ready-to-use legal resources tailored to meet business needs.

2.14 Third Party: Any entity or individual outside of ME Academy who may have access to personal data for specific purposes, such as analytics, marketing, customer service, billing for Services, or legal compliance. 

2.15 Tracking Technologies: Tools such as pixels, cookies, and other tracking mechanisms that are used to collect and analyse user behaviour and interaction with the LMS and/or SME Hub, often for marketing and improvement of services. 

2.16 User, You, Your: Any individual or entity that accesses, registers for, or otherwise accesses and/or uses the Platform, our Products or any of the Services. 

  1. Collection of your Personal Data

We may collect personally identifiable information, such as, but not limited to, name, physical address, telephone number, and IP address. The information that we collect and store often depends on the type of Product you use. For example, when you subscribe to a course or access a legal resource, we collect and maintain your account information, such as your login details, password, email address, and contact information. 

If you contact our customer service team, we may retain relevant communication records, such as emails, phone calls, or chat transcripts, to improve the quality of our Services and resolve any issues you raise. If a third party sponsors your access and/or use of any of our Products, we may collect and store information about your affiliation with the sponsoring third party, for account management and reporting purposes. We will retain user information in compliance with applicable legal and operational requirements.  We will also honour requests to delete personal data submitted by account holders, as outlined in this Privacy Policy.

Information about your computer hardware and software may be automatically collected by us. This information can include your IP address, browser type, domain names, access times, operating system, cookie information, referring website addresses, and Internet Service Provider. ME Academy also collects geolocation information based on visitors’ IP addresses. This information is used by ME Academy for the operation of the service, to maintain quality of the service, and to provide general statistics regarding use of the Services. In order to better understand how users use its site and to improve its services, we may also collect information about your use of our Site, such as pages visited, links clicked, text entered, and mouse movements.

Please keep in mind that if you directly disclose personally identifiable information or personally sensitive data about your use of our Platform to third parties, this information may be collected and used by them. We encourage you to review the privacy statements of entities or services you access from our website so that you can understand how those entities collect, use and share your information. We are not responsible for the privacy statements, privacy practices, or content on websites or services outside of those we operate.

3.1. The Personal Data we have about You is made available to us when you do any of the following:

  • Sign up for an account
  • Use the Platform, our Services or Products
  • Contact our customer support team
  • Fill out our online forms
  • Enter an ME Academy-sponsored or affiliated promotion

Social media: depending on Your settings on the privacy policies for social media and messaging services such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. You may give us permission to access information from those accounts or services.

Other Sources: We may receive information about You from other sources, including publicly available databases and combine this data with information we already have about You, this helps us to update, expand, and analyse our records and provide services that may be of interest to You.

3.2. Use of your Personal Data

We collect and use your personal information to operate and improve our Services and deliver the Services you have requested. ME Academy may also use your personal information to inform you of other products or services available from ME Academy and its affiliates that may interest you.  We may also contact you to participate in surveys to conduct research about your opinion of current services or of potential new services that may be offered.

We do not sell, rent, or lease our customer lists to third parties. We may, from time to time, contact you on behalf of external business partners about a particular offering that may be of interest to you. In cases where you request us to do so, we will share your personal information with trusted business partners so that they can offer you products or services that you’ve expressed interest in. In those cases, your unique personally identifiable information (e-mail, name, telephone number) shall not be transferred to the third party without your express consent.

We may share data with vendors or processors to help us perform statistical analysis, send you email or postal mail, perform tasks required to complete a purchase transaction, provide customer support, or provide other types of customer relationship management. We may also share information on your use of our Site, such as the pages visited, links clicked, non-sensitive text entered, and mouse movements, with third party providers of web and application analytic services in order to enable ME Academy to understand site usage, detect fraud and any potential threats as well as improve its Services. We may disclose personal information when we believe it is required to comply with the law (such as, a lawful subpoena, warrant or court order); to enforce or apply this Privacy Policy or our other policies or agreements; to initiate, render, bill, and collect for amounts owed to us; to protect our or our users’ rights, property or safety; to protect our users from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful use of the Services; or if we believe that an emergency involving the danger of death or serious physical injury to any person requires or justifies disclosure of personal information.

In certain situations, We provide an API licence to business partners in order for them to provide certain services to ME Academy via their own websites or applications. In these situations, we may collect, store, and disclose to the relevant API partner your personal data to enable the API partner to offer our Services and/or its services to you, or for purposes of sending you marketing communications as permitted under applicable law. We also collect, store and use personal information gathered via the API business relationship for purposes of monitoring and improving our Services. 

Finally, you consent to receiving emails and updates from ME Academy. You can opt out of marketing communications at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in our emails or updating your preferences in your account settings

  1. How Users Can Access, Change, Correct, and Delete Their Information  

You may access, modify, correct, or delete information (including personal data) previously submitted by logging into your ME Academy account and navigating to “Account Settings” to update the relevant fields. You may also modify or delete drafts, as well as remove completed documents or personal information stored in your account.

To request the deletion of your data, including any residual information that may not be accessible through your account, you may contact our customer service team at +234-8032973926 during our regular business hours (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, West African Time). Upon receipt of your request, we will process the deletion in accordance with applicable data protection regulations and our internal retention policies. Upon receiving your request, ME Academy will process the deletion as follows:

  • Verification of Request – To protect your security and privacy, we may require identity verification before processing your request.
  • Assessment of Data – We will determine whether your data can be immediately deleted or if certain records must be retained for legal, compliance, or operational purposes.
  • Deletion Process – Eligible data will be permanently removed from our active databases. Any residual copies in backup systems will be deleted in accordance with our standard retention schedules.
  • Confirmation – Once deletion is complete, we will notify you via your registered email.

Please note that certain information may be retained for regulatory compliance, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, or other legitimate business purposes, as permitted by applicable laws.

For more complex deletions or technical issues, our customer service team can assist in processing the request to ensure complete removal in accordance with this Policy.

  • Right to object to processing: You have the right to object to the processing of Your Personal Information in certain circumstances. Please note that where You object to us processing Your Personal Information, we may be unable to provide our Services to You, and you may also not be able to access the Platform or any of our Products.

We use tracking technologies to create remarketing audiences of Users based on user behaviour and visits to our website. We may also target these users with custom ads based on affinities/interests, geographic and demographic signals. Furthermore, ME Academy may use email addresses to target users with custom ads through third party advertising platforms. We share certain customer information with third parties to perform services (advertising) on our behalf.

  1. Transfer of Personal Data

In the event of any arrangement whereby ME Academy sells or transfers all, or a portion of, its business or assets (including in the event of a reorganisation, dissolution or liquidation) to third parties, you hereby consent that your Personal Data held with ME Academy through your use of our Platform can be transferred or assigned to third parties who may become the controllers and/or processors of your Personal Data that was held by ME Academy prior to such arrangement.

A report will be filed with relevant regulatory authorities in compliance with the Data Protection Legislation.

We will not be responsible for any personal data breach which occurs as a result of:

  • an event which is beyond the control of ME Academy;

  • an act of God (such as, but not limited to fires, explosions, earthquakes, drought, tidal waves and floods) which compromises our data protection measures;
  • any hostilities (whether war be declared or not), invasion, act of foreign enemies, mobilisation, requisition, or embargo;

  • the transfer of your personal data to a third party on your instructions; and
  • the use of your personal data by a third party designated by you.

  1. Violation of this Policy 

Any person subject to this Policy who is found to be in breach of this Policy by:

failure to implement safeguards required by the NDPR or any of the security measures provided in this Policy:

  • failure to mitigate the damage once it has occurred; or
  • failure to timely notify the affected individuals;
  • may be liable, in addition to any other civil liabilities, to the penalties provided in the Data Protection Legislation.

We don’t share your personal information with them unless you’ve agreed to it, and we’re not responsible for what happens outside the Platform. If you have any complaints or disputes relating to our Services or this Agreement, please contact us at  support@me-academy.org.  We will investigate and work on resolutions for complaints and disputes regarding use and disclosure of Personal Information within a reasonable time in accordance with this Privacy Policy and in accordance with applicable data protection laws. We may request additional details from You regarding your complaints and keep records of your requests and their resolutions.
